“Mummies in the Morning” by Mary Pope Osborne

Book three in The Magic Treehouse series, Mummies in the Morning is about eight-year-old Jack and his little sister Annie travelling in space and time in their treehouse. In this installment, they learn all kinds of things about ancient Egypt. They meet Hutepi, Queen of the Nile, learn about hieroglyphics and how to read them, discover several mummies (including how and why the Egyptians made them), and more. This, like all books in the series, is suspenseful and adventurous the whole way through while being educational at the same time.

Mummies in the Morning is a fun way to introduce ancient practices and a new culture to students. This could be accompanied by a lesson in symbology with hieroglyphics, in how organisms decompose (and how they can be preserved) with mummies, and of course simply a lesson on ancient history.
