“And Tango Makes Three” by Justin Richardson and Peter Parneff
This is a true story about two male penguins in a zoo who are uninterested in finding female partners and are happy only having the companionship of another male penguin. Two other penguins create an egg but are unable to care for it themselves. The zookeepers notice this, and give the egg to the two male penguins for them to care for it. The egg hatches and the zookeepers name her Tango. People visit the zoo from all over to see the male penguins and their child.
This book is a great way to introduce children to certain phenomena in nature. A child reading this book not only learns about nature, but society as well. Some students, depending on their age and upbringing, do not know about types of families other than their own. This book has great application for younger children to learn about the different ways families can look.
