“Julián is a Mermaid” by Jessica Love

Julián is a Mermaid tells the story of Julián, a young boy who is obsessed with pretty women and mermaids in elaborate clothing. He swims with them, dreaming of what it would be like to be a mermaid. He realizes that he can create his own beautiful outfit at home, using potted plants and drapes. In his new dress, his Abuela sees how much this means to him. So, she takes Julián to see the “mermaids:” tons and tons of people expressing themselves in all kinds of clothing.

This book shows that the gender someone is born as should not dictate the clothes they wear. Julián is able to express himself and fit in despite stereotypes around what boys are expected to wear. The illustrations are absolutely breathtaking, and all the people and their clothes are beautiful. I am always looking for queer stories in children’s stories, especially in terms of gender expression and breaking stereotypes.
