“Hot Dog” by Doug Salati

Hot Dog is about, well, a dog on a hot day! It won the 2023 Randolph Caldecott Medal for children’s picture books. The dog is a little overwhelmed on this hot day in the big city but is able to finally cool of when their owner takes them to the beach to relax. This book shows how the little joys in life can brighten one’s day. I found myself smiling at the illustrations and descriptions of how happy this dog was!

I think this book is absolutely delightful and it would be a great read for young kids. I imagine this being read to a class as one of the last classes before summer break, inspiring conversation about how the students like to spend time in the summer.
