“I Want My Hat Back” by Jon Klassen
I Want My Hat Back is about a bear who loses his hat and goes around asking all the other animals if they have any idea where it could be. He goes one by one asking animals if they have seen it, or if they know where he can find it. He sees other animals in hats, but none of them are his, or they say it’s theirs. By the end, he realizes he already saw his hat, but was fooled into not believing it. He gets his hat back from the nefarious rabbit, and it is implied that the bear eats the rabbit as retribution.
I truly cannot explain how much I love the art in this book. It is both cute and funny, while being lovely watercolor paintings, too. In a younger class, I would take any opportunity to read this book with them. Although it is simple, it can teach problem solving and how to figure out an issue with given evidence.
