“Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein

This is one of those books that I read over and over as a child. My family had several books by Shel Silverstein, but this is the one that was on the bookshelf in my room, so I read it the most. Its place here in my favorites is very biased towards my childhood self! But even flipping through it years later, I still found these poems delightful and adventurous. The illustrations look effortless but clearly have a lot of thought put into them- this fit the poems themselves, which could be described in the same way.

I think this is one of those books that would be great to keep in a classroom for students to go through at any time, rather than reading it as a class or doing assignments based on it. The rhymes often add a level of humor or joy to whatever the subject may be, meaning that these are largely lighthearted and fun poems for children to enjoy.
